Once your sample is in our lab, we extract the sample from your swabs using our highly sensitive and proprietary virus extraction methods that were developed based on proven literature methods. This extract is then tested using validated real-time PCR (rtPCR) methods that have the ability to detect just 20 viral particles per test. We use state-of-the art rtPCR instrumentation that allows for fast turnaround, built-in technical controls for test reliability, and high sensitivity.

The Zone Detection kit delivers the same sensitive detection of SARS-CoV-2 as our Full Facility kit, but for a smaller number of surfaces. If you are looking to test a smaller space or just want to try out the service, this kit is for you.

Q.1 What are the common types of environmental samples?

The 3 main sources of environmental samples are surface swabs, air samples, and water/waste samples. Almost all of these methods rely on the same underlying process - collection of virus particles by wiping or filtration, purification/concentration of the virus particles away from the collection device, and specific detection using RT-PCR or sequencing methods. All environmental sampling methods are intended to detect the virus independent of the presence of an infected individual.

Q.2 What is surface sampling?

Some of the earliest environmental samples of SARS-CoV-2 collected in Wuhan were surface samples collected by wiping sponges or swabs over various surfaces to collect a snapshot of where potential virus transmission points were in a hospital setting. This method is being used to investigate what specific materials, and objects are key suspects in viral transmission.

Q.3 How do I collect surface samples?

Collect surface samples by wiping the surface of the test object with the swabs and/or pads provided in the kit. Place the swabs/pads into collection tubes that contain lysis buffer which will inactivate and prepare the virus for testing when our lab receives your package. Remember to note on the card what surface you tested.

Q.4 What is air sampling?

SARS-CoV-2 virus has been detected in respiratory secretions (upper and lower respiratory tract). The main route of transmission is considered to be through inhalation of large respiratory droplets or deposition on mucosae. Additionally, more data is being collected showing the viral transmission via aerosols go beyond the traditional guidance of a six foot range. Collection of surface samples in air vents and air samples have been pivotal in monitoring this mode of transmission.

Q.5 How do I collect air samples?

Air samples are collected using the filtration unit and included air filters. When you are ready for testing, you can remove the cartridge and send it back to us in the prepaid shipper. You should record the length of time that the cartridge is in use before testing.

Q.6 How long should I collect an air sample for?

Air samples should be collected for at least 20 minutes and as long as 24 hours before sending back to the lab for testing.

Q.7 Do you accept water samples?

There is a small, but growing, interest in water sampling to detect SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater streams as an early warning mechanism in a community. We will be continuing to monitor these methods.

However, at this time, we do not have any kits or methods to support this.

Q.8 Can I collect samples with my own materials and send them to you for testing?

We have optimized our sampling materials to get the best results possible and we cannot guarantee results if other materials are used. However, we are happy to work with you to figure out if we are able to test your materials. Please contact us at [email protected] and we will respond as soon as possible.

Q.9 How do I return my samples for testing?

Return postage via FedEx is included in the price of the kit and a return label will be provided to you. Please use the enclosed box to return your sample

Q.10 Is there any special handling that I need to know about?

Please make sure to double bag the samples after they are collected. Two bags are included in the package.

Q.11 What temperature do the samples need to be shipped at?

Samples are room temperature stable, so all you need to do is drop them in the box and ship them back!

Q.12 How long will it take to get my results?

We guarantee results within 48 hours of receipt of the sample at our lab and we aim to get you results within 24 hours.

Q.13 How will I get my results?

Results will be returned to you by email and we are working on a web portal where you can view your results.

Q.14 Are the kits available for international customers or destinations?

Currently, the kits are only available to customers or destinations in the United States.
