Acts as a chaperone to prevent the damaging aggregation of alpha-hemoglobin during normal erythroid cell growth. Specifically protects free alpha-hemoglobin from precipitation.

It is predicted to modulate pathological states of alpha-hemoglobin excess like beta-thalassemia. .
