Modulates functional properties of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) to prevent excess excitation, and hence neurodegeneration. Enhances desensitization by increasing both the speed and extent of desensitization of alpha- 4:beta-2-containing nAChRs and slowing recovery from desensitization.

Expressed in neurons of multiple regions in the CNS, including the cerebral cortex, thalamus, substantia nigra, cerebellum, amygdala and hippocampus (PubMed:10402197, PubMed:11906696). Also expressed in kidney, heart and thymus, but at lower levels than in the brain (PubMed:10402197). Expressed in the primary visual cortex (V1) and the lateral geniculate nucleus (at protein level) (PubMed:21071629).
