AT-rich interactive domain-containing protein 1A (ARID1A)

Component of SWI/SNF chromatin remodeling complexes that carry out key enzymatic activities, changing chromatin structure by changing DNA-histone contacts within a nucleosome within an ATP-dependent method. Binds DNA non-specifically.

Belongs to the neural progenitors-specific chromatin remodeling complex (npBAF complicated ) as well as the neuron-specific chromatin remodeling complex (nBAF complicated ). During neural development a switch from a stem/progenitor into a postmitotic chromatin remodeling mechanism occurs as neurons exit the cell cycle and become dedicated to their adult state.
