Initiates several important metabolic pathways associated with pyruvate and lots of sulfurate compounds including sulfate, hypotaurine and taurine. Critical regulator of cellular cysteine concentrations.

Has an important part in keeping the hepatic concentation of intracellular free cysteine within a correct narrow range. .
