Tudor domain-containing protein 1 (TDRD1)

Plays a central role during spermatogenesis by participating in the repression transposable elements and preventing their mobilization, which is vital for the germline integrity. Acts via the piRNA metabolic process, which mediates the repression of transposable elements during meiosis by forming complexes composed of piRNAs and Piwi proteins and modulates the methylation and subsequent repression of transposons.

Required for the localization of Piwi proteins to the meiotic nuage. Involved in the piRNA metabolic process by ensuring that the entry of correct transcripts into the standard piRNA pool and limiting the entry of cellular transcripts into the piRNA pathway.
