Background of IL-6

Interleukin-6 (IL-6) is a protein that in humans is encoded by the IL6 gene. IL-6 is an interleukin that acts as both a pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokine. It is secreted by T cells and macrophages to stimulate immune response to trauma, especially burns or other tissue damage leading to inflammation. IL-6 is one of the most important mediators of fever and of the acute phase response. IL-6 is also essential for hybridoma growth and is found in many supplemental cloning media such as briclone. Bowcock et al. (1988) assigned the IL6 gene to chromosome 7p21. By in situ hybridization and Southern blot analysis of mouse-human hybrid cell lines, Sutherland et al. (1988) mapped the IL6 gene to chromosome 7p15.

Antibody Validation

Boster validates all antibodies on WB, IHC, ICC, Immunofluorescence, and ELISA with known positive control and negative samples to ensure specificity and high affinity, including thorough antibody incubations.

3 Customer Q&As for Anti-Interleukin-6 IL6 Antibody

Question

We have been able to see staining in human lung. Do you have any suggestions? Is anti-IL6 antibody supposed to stain lung positively?

Verified Customer

Asked: 2019-08-30

Answer

Based on literature lung does express IL6. Based on Uniprot.org, IL6 is expressed in left coronary artery, fibroblast, lung, among other tissues. Regarding which tissues have IL6 expression, here are a few articles citing expression in various tissues:
Fibroblast, Pubmed ID: 3758081
Lung, Pubmed ID: 15489334

Question

We are currently using anti-IL6 antibody PA1700 for human tissue, and we are well pleased with the WB results. The species of reactivity given in the datasheet says human. Is it possible that the antibody can work on primate tissues as well?

D. Edwards

Verified customer

Asked: 2017-08-15

Answer

The anti-IL6 antibody (PA1700) has not been tested for cross reactivity specifically with primate tissues, but there is a good chance of cross reactivity. We have an innovator award program that if you test this antibody and show it works in primate you can get your next antibody for free. Please contact me if I can help you with anything.

Question

We were happy with the WB result of your anti-IL6 antibody. However we have seen positive staining in fibroblast secreted. using this antibody. Is that expected? Could you tell me where is IL6 supposed to be expressed?

T. Jones
